API makes a product called Amazon Extract that made my Cichla go nuts. They looked really really good but I quit using it since I have to use about a gallon per week to maintain the effects of it.

ah...but i dont think i'll want to buy it.
making it myself is cheaper, and more fun than going to a store.:D
but...after just one waterchange, the effect is already gone.:(

Yeah the stuff I used wore off real quick too. Fluval makes peat granules that are in little fine mesh bags. Alot less staining than actual peat as well. Never used them in the big tank but I bet it would be more sustained if used in a filter that way, granted there was no carbon being used.

ah...ive used the stuff before.
i dont like changing it every few months...LOL...not to mention i needed a lot to get the effect i wanted.

I was just thinking of that the other day...... something pre made that you can even just drop into a HOB or any filter for that matter. Just to put some nutrients in the tank from time to time.

That's why you need to dedicate a tank or vat to storing water that has already been treated with extract for water changes. Siphon out the old and use your pre-treated water to refill your tank.

unfortunately i cant do that right now...
so i guess i could just make more and add again.
but even without the WCs,the effect disappears...:irked:
maybe i will just leave it as it is for now.

Why don't you use some natural bogwood, that would release the tannins to make the colours pop, and the nutrients would still be in the water from the peat.

that works, but then i'd have to get new wood over time....:(
eh,at least their colors are still good now.
i guess some of the nutrients are still in my water.
