First of all, my only filter experience is HOB.

I found this DIY online in another forum (http://www.petfrd.com/forum/articles...rtid=87&page=1).

For a 55Gal. Tank Possibly 75Gal. Would this be practical? I was thinking (with the help of SpJ) a 5Gal. bucket with a lid would work wonders for that.

I could stage multiple filtration media in some way shape or form.

Any input here on the Filtration forum?

Also this Tank would have 3-5 Loaches a Sen/Del Bichir and a SA Cichlid.

Yes for a 75 gall I would make two of those canisters.

If your not that experienced but want clean water I would make a DIY sump instead, they are easier and much more tutorials

A true canister filter is air tight and that would be harder IMO and its almost the same thing as a sump, sumps are easier to handle as well

for a 75 gallon tank I would either make 2 of those Diy canister things or buy 1 BIG or 2 small HOBS just just an underwater fluval.

A sump? oh it can be just a 20 gallon bucket or something from home depot put some scrubbies or some ceremic rings, a drip plate, and then it drips down into a big tub which pumps water back up in tank.

The " sump" can go on the side of the aquarium.

I was looking at Aqua Clear HOB but I've been pointed towards sump/canister. Also the sump would need to go under tank due to apartment confinement =S

do you not want something that goes under your aquarium? if thats it then jut make two of those DIY canister, or one big one.. unless u wanna buy an underwater filter

Making that filter out of a bucket looks like nothing but a headache. The lid will probably leak, and you'll make a mess every time you have to clean it. For a 55g, I would go with 2 AC70's, or a medium sized canister, Eheim 2217 or similar.

That link shows a real low flow filter.
Even if you up the size of the media container to the 5g buckets mentioned, in order for it not to leak, it too would be low flow.
The bucket filter has been "kicked" around here way to many times, with no one getting a good result.

Something like the above would make more sense.
No leaks and 500gph of flow with 20 micron filtration.
It cost about $60 to build, but of course for that money you could get 2 more HOB.

imo thats better than a HOB, do hob's have 500 gph? i dunn think so

But for what it cost to build one, you can get a pair of Penguin 350, with 700gph from BigAl and still have a pocket full of $$$$$ left over.
I only used it for a short time, pump sprung a leak.
