better than a HOB, do hob's have 500 gph? i dunn think so

But for what it cost to build one, you can get a pair of Penguin 350, with 700gph from BigAl and still have a pocket full of $$$$$ left over.
I only used it for a short time, pump sprung a leak.

i have one penguin 350 how can i make it 700 gph?

That link shows a real low flow filter.
Even if you up the size of the media container to the 5g buckets mentioned, in order for it not to leak, it too would be low flow.
The bucket filter has been "kicked" around here way to many times, with no one getting a good result.

Something like the above would make more sense.
No leaks and 500gph of flow with 20 micron filtration.
It cost about $60 to build, but of course for that money you could get 2 more HOB.
This looks like it would make a great polisher

Get another one... penguin 350's are 350gph x2 = 700gph.

Thank You......

When using the 5 micron taste/oder cartridge it did an outstanding job.
If the pump housing had not started leaking I would probably still have it running.
Kind of awkward getting it on and off the back of the tank.
Really a simple build.
Does not cost a fortune and did an outstanding job.

By chance do you still have the link/tutorial for this particular filter? and if so could you post it... Thanks!

how long did a 5 micron cartridge last? And the 20?
Best I got, at full flow, on the 5 micron was 5 to 7 days.
The 20 could go for a couple of weeks.
When the 5 micron cartridge clogged no amount of rinsing I did cleaned it enough to use again.
The 20 I could rinse and reuse.

Sorry, can`t recall where I posted this.
Picture tells the story.
A ViaAqua 2300 pump(around $30, when on sale-includes shipping). These are pretty cool pumps. You can use them submerged or inline. They come with a handy accessory pack, that includes a ball valve and assorted fittings. The failed pump is now running submerged on a water feature by my front door.
A whole house water filter housing, around $20 at most any HD/Lowes.
A pair of filter cartridges, $7 for rust/sediment(20 micron)at wal mart.
Bits and pieces of PVC.
If I do another one, I would go with a filter housing that has a shut off valve built into it and use a bit of flexible tubing between pump and filter.
Pretty sure the hard pipe connection is what caused the pump housing failure.
This build made sense to me, as I had most all the parts from other projects and some time on my hands.
With some careful shopping, you could get a Magnum350, or HOT250 for about the cost of the DIY version. Not quite as much performance but allot less hassle.

Thanks for the replies guys. That's a very neat HOB type filter. I'll keep note. I think I'll go the AC70's x2. Then possibly do a air stone or powerhead to give a bit more water movement.

Thanks a bunch for the replies again.
