My design for a DIY canister filter:
intake hose -> Quiet One (3000) -> bottom of 7 gal bucket from usplastics.com (possibly an 8gal barrel since it has more secure close for the lid) -> out top of "canister" -> back into tank.
The thing that I need help with is the valve connection for the top of the canister to the hose and the from the hose at the bottom to the pump. Without the valves, during cleaning, all of the water would siphon out of the tank. Can someone help me out?
If you dont understand my design just say what it is you dont get and I will try to clarify.

Give it a little more time than 20 minutes before you bump your own thread. Be a bit more patient. ;)

Sounds more like your just doing a diy sump out of a bucket as opposed to a "diy canister." IMO don't bother wasting your time with some bucket and just go get a used aquarium and run a sump which is practically what your describing, just in a bucket...

use small standard PVC bulkheads to go through the lid and put ball valves on the inlet and outlet. Some of the clear pipe you can buy is made of PCV, and for that you can use standard PV cement to connect & seal. Otherwise use some sort of epoxy.
I like this idea of using a big commercial mayonnaise bucket as a canister.

I hope that I uploaded the picture correctly. And yeah that was my thought too, except that I meant like a legit bucket from usplastics, or a barrel which is like 15 gal which would leave me plenty of space for media.

Restaurants buy mayo in 10 & 20Gal buckets (vats) with heavy plastic walls and threaded sealing lids. Pickles similar. The price is right, if you are or know the dish-pig. If your pump is big enough you can put a couple in series with different media to reduce your cleaning schedule.

Fair enough- your barrels are prettier... and have handles!

why not just run unions out of your bucket then put your values right after the unions. Then you can close your values then undo the unions to get the bucket out

Thanks for all the tips guys. A few questions though. 1: Who could I talk to or what company could I call to find such a mayo container? (I was also thinking of putting a few of them in a series and the cheaper price of mayo containers would be ideal) 2: I am having a hard time finding unions and valves that are 1"(the size of the output on most quiet one models) could you possibly post links? The pvc bulkhead was easy enough to find in 1" though so thanks for that suggestion, andyroo.
