Thanks for all the tips guys. A few questions though. 1: Who could I talk to or what company could I call to find such a mayo container? (I was also thinking of putting a few of them in a series and the cheaper price of mayo containers would be ideal) 2: I am having a hard time finding unions and valves that are 1"(the size of the output on most quiet one models) could you possibly post links? The pvc bulkhead was easy enough to find in 1" though so thanks for that suggestion, andyroo.

Go to home depot or lowes. They will have all those fittings.

I would be very concerned about the lid leaking if this is going to be inside your house. Even at only 3' of head there is over 100 pounds of pressure on the lid (10" lid @ 1.5 PSI). I have a couple NuClear canisters that have a similar closure design, only a whole lot more robust. If you don't get them really tight they will leak. These barrels have lids meant to keep the contents in, not to hold pressure.

I'm not saying it can't be done, only that you should beware of the possibility that it might not seal tightly enough.

Thanks for the heads up Dan F. What would you recommend using?

Honestly, I would have to say used NuClear or Ocean Clear canisters off CL are probably the best bet. I've done a lot of DIY stuff, but never a canister for this reason...

I'm sorry but CL?

Craigslist - there are plenty of weirdos/flakes, but usually people selling equipment are a little better than people selling tanks.

Also where did you get the 1.5ppi from?

For every foot of head height (distance from filter to the water level) you get ~.5 pounds/inch of pressure. If you plan on placing the filter under the tank I figured a minimum of about 3' head (1' below a 2' tank).

This would be the static pressure. It will increase with pressure generated by the pump.
