I've been doing a little thinking, and it seems to me that one could save a lot of money building their own canister. I'm curious if anyone has ever built one using a pond pump like this http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=59084-48650-DP330&lpage=none

I used to actually be a sales rep for similar pumps. They are pretty reliable and fairly inexpensive. I understand this wouldn't be the most powerful pump for a large canister, but for a 50 gallon or less, it seems like it could work. Curious to hear of experiences or input. thanks

I Searched for you HERE

The majority of DIY canister filters fail because most use buckets / containers with lids that are not built to withstand head pressures and most don't build them to purge. Some even try to pump water into the canister which will only make it fail quicker.

In that link above you will see my thread (6 Gallon bucket canister filter). Important information in there.

yeah that orange 5 gal. bucket canister is what made me think of this, but I want something that keeps the pump inside/submerged as oppose to hanging on the side.

Look at my thread I spoke about. You can find it by clicking on the link

oh ok didnt see that...... i clicked on the one you commented about instead of your thread

pretty cool dood. for my budget and the size i need, that would be overkill. i'm kinda leaning towards thinking that if you're going for a smaller canister, buying one is cheaper than building. but as size of tank increases, value of building a diy increases. thanks for the interest though!

Basically what I was pointing out, is the information about what is needed to build any type of DIY canister. Not exactly a DIY canister out of a 6 gallon bucket.

i'm really not even in need of a canister i guess. I don't have a tank bigger than 30 gallon. I have hob biowheels on my tanks and it serves the purpose on those tanks. i'm just ocd and i'm always looking for projects to do for my tanks

buying one is cheaper than building
Found that out:irked:
Was looking to put a few(3or4)pieces of 4"pvc pipe together as a segmented canister..priced it out and the $ amount saved over an off the shelf unit would have got me lunch at burger king:D

plus, usually if something is really faulty with a store bought, you can take it up with the company and get it replaced. with your diy, you gotta trust your work, you know?
