DIY Canopy Light Mount

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
run a bead of silicone between the plates to form a hinge

cool idea.. any suggesstions on types of silicone?
also.. never realy considered the insulative properties of the glass... maybe I should keep them in place afterall...

the light is still a pain though.. since its sitting right on top of the glass plates, I wouldnt really be able to "open" them up anyways... think im still going to mount the light just for the sake of easy access to the tank

the only problem with the plates is that they have a pretty bad buildup of hard water on them...

does anyone have suggestions on how to get rid of it?

or does anyone know how much a new set of plates would set me back?

I've heard that soaking/using a vinegar solution is pretty effective way to get rid of hardwater deposits... I'm planning or trying this on my cheap tank rebuild.

Anything the vinegar misses can be removed with automotive rubbing compound.

alright, took some pictures of the canopy.. maybe you guys can help me out

I want to know if I should seal the inside of the canopy, to prevent damage from the humidity of the tank

in the picture with the white block, im showing what im planning to do...

Im going to put a similar block on the other side, and use the two of them as mounts for my lighting fixture

I would seal it either with polyurethane or paint. I don't think you'll have too much trouble, but better safe than sorry I always say. your canopy is made of oak plywood, which is pretty expensive stuff. Worth taking a few minutes to try and preserve it.

I am building an oak hood for my 20 high. I will be coating the inside with a stark white high gloss paint for sealant and also refelctive properties.
