Lowering PH for me is not wanted, actually I use backing soda to try to keep things in the 7 range. It usually falls to about 6.3 after one week of no water changes, and starts at about 7-7.3. No minerals in the water to speak of in my area.

I am looking at the foam DIY ones now, I really think this is the way to go in the front room, forget about that crappy image on there now!

Thanks for the ideas!

Yeah my tap water comes out really hard with a pH of 7.8. Using cork and CO2 brings it down to 6.4. The fish i have in the tank enjoy acidic waters so they love it.

Great looking, my only concern would be how well the cork would hold up. But if someone is at 2 years already, that is long enough between having to rescape. Pretty cool idea.

It's possible for it to break but it's a lot stronger than it might look it's about 1/2" thick and pretty sturdy even when wet.

I did a 72g background in cork a while ago. It was up for about a year and then tank broke. The cork was still structurally sound when I removed the tank. I ended up selling the tank with the cork to a guy with a bearded dragon.
One of these days I'm going to do it again.
