DIY denitrator any risk?

That's an interesting thought.... anyone know the answer to this question:

If you produce hydrogen sulfide in your denitrator... can you de-gas the water adequately to remove any threat? or does it remain in solution?

It only happens after the rig is functioning and the flow is increased (usually someone messing with the flow rate not a malfunction of the unit).

Yes you can remove as in a normal de-gasing function. drip to a highly aerated sump before returning to the tank. This should already be the practice as the water from the rig has been stripped of oxygen.

another question , how long can the bacteria in the denitrator surviveis a power failure occurs? or would it be safe to just leave it and wait for power to be restored? or will the water that comes out foul up?

2) Dangerous assumption. S/W systems may use live sand, large areas of anerobic activity in a F/W substrate could be devastating to most fish.

Never heard of deep sand beds ( in the "filtering " sense ) in fw, John. Have you?

deep sand bed filters are used for removing nitrates !!

i am looking into building one.....very common in wastewater treatment

Most don't know how to handle them...imagine them stirring the sand to clean it (hydrogen sulfide plums thru-out the tank! Fish doing the backstroke).

Johnptc there are 2 or 3 that don't have 10,000g tanks in their living rooms here (I know...hard to believe).

You must be in the same section of the library I was a few (?, many) years ago (wish I'd followed thru on it). Going to follow yours with interest! I was using the weight of the water (10+ ft high) to offset a large capacity pump.
