I've just been reading on another forum about making a DIY denitrator. It looks pretty simple to make and appears like it would work. I'm wondering if any MonsterFishKeepers have built or tried one and if so was it effective or a waste of time? I'd be keen to find something that would reduce the need for big water changes every week?

How it basically works is you wrap a coil of air tubing around a PVC pipe of around 4"-6" diameter and 3'-5' long(depending on the capacity of your tank). Inside the PVC pipe you fill it with bio media of some kind. You plumb it up so that water passes through the coiled tubing first, this depletes the water of oxygen, then it is passed through the bio media inside the PVC tube where the denitrating(?) bacteria removes nitrates, and then the water returns to the tank.

It should work but you are still going to need to do water changes regularly unless you get a lot of those denitrators. They need very slow water flow to be able to function properly.
