DIY Double Barrel 45G Acrylic Wet/Dry

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That spray bar is a SPRAY BAR and I dont think the original way you hoped the drip plate would work can touch what you have going on there now. It looks like it drops alot of water very evenly- very nice. I wouldnt worry about the mechanical too much- if you run a sponge in your overflow your covered and/or the top layer of your biomedia which probably will be the coarsest will act mechanically for you. Thats too bad you couldnt fit it through the cabinet doors but the bright side of that is you have one big bad mama jama of a sump!

nice spray bars. must have been a lotta work.

Thanks. I spent some hours on it, but I enjoyed it, so the time flew by.

very very nice. except I would have made it have more room for bio by moving the walls towards each other. looks like alot of wasted space.

Thanks!
I would have liked to have moved the walls closer together but then I wouldn't have been able to get a pump down into the tank due to the top bracing. I didn't want to place the pump in the sump then weld the acrylic making it impossible to remove the pump for cleaning and/or replacement. I think I mentioned this earlier in my post that I would have changed my design to have only one larger bio-media chamber and one smaller return pump chamber, like the TruVu TruFlo series wet/dry's (see pic below). This would have solved my issue of not having enough room to get a pump in and out of the sump. I thought it would look cool to have two bio-media chambers, but the bracing of the tank limited my media capacity on each side. I've read that 1 gallon of bio-media is effective for 35 gallons of water (depending on bioload), so based on these figures the sump should handle up to a 700G tank. I'm probably going to set it up on a 270, so I should be ok. But I agree, more is better! The next one I make will have even more bio media area! :headbang2

The spray bars are 1" PVC with tons of 1/4" holes drilled into it. I think I could have gone with smaller PVC with larger holes, but I didn't want to limit water flow at all. Plus, this is MFk , so I went Tim the Tool Man Taylor on it, and went with as big as I could!:headbang2
