Hey everyone,

Is there any way I could make my own driftwood, I have a 150 and it is hard to find big driftwood for a good price.

Also what is a good way to decorate a tank that looks nice and is also easy to maintain? There is no overflow/sump for it, jump two canister filter, and it is currently empty.

Thanks

I am trying to figure out the same thing right now. My hubby and I just went on a hiking expedition near a creek in search of natural driftwood. We found a few long pieces where a part of the creek dried up. Got them home and pulled off all the bark, power sprayed them with the hose and now have them in a large garbage can soaking in water. Problem is...the 2 pieces I like most are floaters. So, I came up with an idea. I'll wrap fishing line around one end and anchor it to a rock. Then I may do the other end but leave some slack in the fishing line. Then hopefully in a few weeks-months I can take the anchors off and it be ok. Wish me luck ;)

Not sure how long. I just started converting my tank to all natural. I'm slowly getting anything fake out. I plan on getting my pieces I found in my aquarium today. I'll let you know how it goes. I know driftwood is pretty expensive at LFS so I'm just looking for other ways to have the "natural river bed" look on a budget.

Started preparing the wood I found and realized 2 of the pieces I found had rot. The other 2 I found seem to be ok but I decided I don't like the look of them. My search will continue :p

Just take a trip down to your closest river access point. I ended up filling my car with really cool looking pieces of pre-weathered driftwood after just an hour or two.

Natural driftwood can bring diseases and parasites into the aquarium.

In addition to that - not knowing what type of wood it is could also add toxins to the tank.

Ive had a piece of gathered driftwood that has been in a tank for two years now - and it still floats.

Yeah, you can say the same thing about driftwood that you buy too. Do know where its been? All the places that it sat? Ect. ect.. hell, i have seen store employees dusting off aquarium decorations on the shelf with crap like Pledge. Those stupid employees don't know any better.

IMO, any weathered (weathered being the key word here) driftwood is safe.. even from oily woods. Oils would have dissipated from an old dead and weathered piece.

Diseases and parasites is easy enough to deal with too... where do you think all the driftwood comes from you guys spends hundreds of dollars for? Just boil or give it a bleach soaking...

And you're stymied by a piece of wood that floats? Come on! Hammer some sharp rocks into it until you achieve the buoyancy that you're looking for.
