DIY Driftwood Pics

Be careful which types of wood you choose. Some wood, say Oak for instance, will take forever to sink and will release tannins forever. The particular pieces I have done were mostly Cherry.

Cedar will also release oils and tannins.

It looks really awesome, but turns the water.

Just to test it, I tried a piece that had been submerged in a freshwater creek/mini river for many years.
My father in-law remembers seeing it there more than ten years agoAt that time it was 90% totally submerged all the time.

When I got it out the creek bed had eroded to 4 ft below the piece that had become trapped in the bank (4ft high)
So it had been submerged for years and then sun baked for years.

It STILL released oils and tannin into my test tank.

I just started curing some more pieces for my new tank. I also have pieces available if someone's looking. I found a great piece submerged in the local river and brought it home - ironically another piece of Cherry! Just gotta get rid of all the nasties on it. Pics to follow.

It's nice that you can find such beautiful wood where you are. We have to buy the wood here and the nice large pieces usually don't come cheap!
