thats all u have to do to make it sink. is let it sit for a month. instead of letting it sit in a cooler can u just boil it like he said and wouldnt that also help it sink boiling the water into the piece...
1. I would have gone fishing for fish in that first pic.

Oh and for any prep work for in tank duties, I like bleach bath followed by extended sun exposure, then repeat a number of times over.
