Cool filter. What size pond would something like this work for? And where can you find a 500gph pump for $20?
It isn't really what size tank, but what size feedings you will be doing. I am not sure as to what the bio capacity of this filter is, but probably much higher than just about any canister on the market for sure. You could run a lightly stocked 1000 gal pond if you are not feeding too much. lol. Or you could run a 100 gal heavily fed tank. I have fed up to 2 lbs a day running 2 of these on a 300 gal pond before with no issues. Again unsure of capacity. You can modify these many ways to help them out. I have also done this before where you can run an air line inside to the bottom and as it bubbles up creates a more oxygen rich environment for the bacteria. Search on ebay for 500 gph pond pumps and you'll find plenty.
very nicei ran these when i had 300 gal tubs a few years ago, kept them crystal clear always. I had the same setup but placed my pump on the outside of the bucket and drew water in from the top of the bucket. They worked exellent for surface skimming. When they ran you could actually see the water creating a swirl above the bucket drawing in particles. If theres more than one on your pond i'd run one each way.....One for particle removal on the floor of the tank and the other running backwards to draw in surface particles. Also for the return i used some regular 3/4" hose and a old canister return to shoot the water above the water surface creating oxyogen and a constant whirlpool to shoot everything right back around into the top of the bucket. My water level was around 2-4" above the bucket, any higher and it wouldnt create the vortex on top....Ill try and dig up a pic its been a while, i remember the old bucket threads its in there

Good ideas. i do it this way to save as much space as possible in the tank so the fish have more room to swim. Would be cool to see the pics!
