DIY Eco system

Sounds like your friend with the red-tailed cats has a solid set up. Maybe, you could try to copy his.
I have also been contemplating the same type of idea for my three big tanks. I am looking to build 100+ gallon sump/refugium and keep it all "hidden" in the stand. I have no info on how much good it will do, but I know that many pond keepers utilize a eco set up and get great results.
If you get any further good information, post it here I and I am sure many others would be interested in your findings.

the eco system is a great way to go my reef thrived with it and im now working with the fresh water mud but you still need frequent water changes THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE for them miracle mud is great but you can not skimp on the water changes

You might consider wanting to plumb yourself a 'planted veggie filter'... An adequate sump, with low oxygen and injected Co2, and some intense lighting. Rapid Grow some plants in there as the water slowly passes through, and it will help eat up nitrates. I had a 420g plumbed system with a single 70g tank that was planted, and it worked great.

I have used 180g-300g water troughs as supplemental fitration but it takes some plumbing and someplace to put it, A screened in porch is great if you are somewhere not to cold. It is like a planted sump using Water lettuce, elodea, and cattails or even flag irises in pots, if the water is plumbed in through the bottom it can be fed up through a couple inches of gravel first. the problem is that over any distance it will need to be a two pump system and that is hard to balance. The bonus is it is a great place to raise mollies or mosquitofish as feeders.
