DIY filter design for dummies (me)

Learning about sumps/overflows/pumps can get confusing with the jargon. If you're really interested, I'd suggest reading some of the DIY and check out pics of the setups. Try to see how the flow of water works. Better yet visit a LFS or someone with an overflow/sump and ask questions. There's no single method to build one, but the principles on how they work are all the same.

ok, well since some of you agree that a bigger overflow my be the best solution, is it best to buy or make one?

if you say buy, where?

if you say make... what do you use? i found a good one you make out of a small and a large specimen container like they use at the LFS to hold your fish b4 bagging

anyone with good link to a great sump design and prefilter?

ive been using it, but im not getting much for prefilters other than the bucket methods... is this all there is?

There are tons of sump designs on the web, but yes, they are generally essentialy the same.

ok well what exactly is a pre filter, cuz the trickle filters i keep seeing appear to be strickly bio filtration, but i planned to build that into my sump.

A prefilter is just like filter floss. Just make your sump like the other ones. What kind of "prefilter" are you thinking of, because I think you are over-anylizing.
