DIY Filters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Does the size of the sump matter or is it just relative to how much filter media you would like to fit?

The size of the sump correlates stictly to the amount of media needed to support the bioload and also the amount of extra space needed to hold extra water volume in the event of a power outage.

Thanks! One of my canisters pooped out this past weekend so I'm kicking my sump making plans into overdrive. It'll probably be a little ghetto at first but oh well....gotta do what you gotta do.

Pics are a must!

So we went shopping for parts for the filter last night and ran into a wall. I couldn't find an air check valve for the overflow. Can anyone tell me around where in the hardware store this can be found?

My water has been really under filtered for several days now and was looking really bad dispite daily water changes. So when we couldn't find the parts last night I gave in and bought a fluval 405.:( Aside from spending way more money than I had wanted I feel defeated because I was so excited about building my filter. Well.....I'm also glad that I don't have to worry about my fish any more. It was taking me way too long to get my stuff toghter and I couldn't risk anything happening to them. We are getting another 130 gal though. Just have to take the time to go pick it up. So I still plan on building the filter. I'm kinda glad I did it this way so I can make sure I do it right. Being my first build if I tried to rush through it I probably would have had a ton of problems

You buy the air check valves at the Local Fish Store.

That would be a good reason why I couldn't find it:ROFL:

Thanks
