i think that making your own pellets is a "nice" idea, do i agree with the ingredients this person used? no i dont but just because he used crappy ingredients dosent mean i cant use some good one and make some nice treats for my fish

That's what I think!

You could easily choose specific fish proteins to put in, back that up with fruit and veg (just look at NLS ingredient panel for examples!), spirulina powder, and a suitable vitamin supplement!

A good point that has been raised is that of shelf life, adding some kind of preservative would be a good idea but probably getting a bit technical.

A few years back I did a program at the Melbourne Aquarium in Australia, it was a behind the scenes thing with lots of food prep and feedings. Preparing the food, was literally a matter of sort out oily fish and non-oily fish, squid etc, cutting to suitable sizes for certain fish and then cramming a few HUMAN multi-vitamin tablets in the pieces of fish!

I think it's a nice idea too. Don't sweat the wannabee fish scientists lol. Hey if you try it let me know how it goes. As a quick test I took a few jumbo shrimp I had in the freezer, pureed them, added a couple tblspns of flour, and baked. It stunk and came out like chunks of rubber..not enough flour I guess. I'm going to keep experimenting...seems like it would be easier (and less smelly) to cook the meat first then puree it.

A for effort imo.

You think brands like nls or 01 aren't making any $$$? their just doing it for the love of peoples pets? If and i do mean IF you can source some of the same ingredients in bulk you stand a very good chance on saving money, but after the time and effort imo maybe not worth it, but to the fish enthusiast who insists on doing so the satisfaction and pride that comes from making your own "healthy" fish food may in the end be worth it....who's to judge?

Have fun, that's what its about!

YES someone gets it! i for one like diy projects and diy food is awesome, i've made frozen food before and i really enjoyed it and so did my fish, maybe i didnt save any money but it was fun and isnt that what fish keeping is all about!

These conversations are always heated and the subject of home made fish foods is always polarized at best. If it's something someone wants to try I don't see any thing wrong with it, as experimentation (the learning curve) is one of the interesting parts of the hobby. It just has to be realized that depending on how it is made (ingreediance /processing) and the species being fed that all the nutritional requirements may not be met. Water quality may also be adversely impacted as a result. I think in order to be successful some knowledge fish nutrition must be possessed and or researched before attempting to use home made recepies as a staple or the return on investment may not yield the results desired. A healthy conversation and exchange of ideas is always good we just have to discuss it in a civil way so we educate and not alienate.

This is VERY good point! The fact of the matter is that most of us don't have a clue about the nutritional requirements of fish! Companies that produce good foods I assume do know this!

However just the other day I was reading something about how bad garlic can be for fish!

this is something alittle research will answer

only read the first page.when i had 20 discus. i couldnt afford all the frozen foods. i found a recipie on the net. i used deer liver(free) i blanched fresh spinich, added a vitamin to help with digestion, andded garlic for intestinal parisites, and a few other things. for about $5 i could make enough food to last 6 months. it was frozen in cubes using egg crate light difusser. i put what i had and what i thought my fish needed. it cost me next to nothing and my fish bread constantly
