Unless You have a way to get the supplies at a discount or for free. Along with a good knack for craftsmenship. It's usually better to just shell out the dough at you lfs. Try other classifieds too. Lots of people get burnt out quick and you'll find great deals. Just my 2 cents--Cheers

I think your best bet is to get a job.. you're only 14, but you should be able to get working papers from your school. I started dishwashing when I was 14 to appease my paintball habit. At least your 'rents arent buying it all for you! kids are so spoiled these days, whether you build your tank yourself or earn the money to buy one you will have much more pride in it, than if it was given to you.

now that always isn't true. my 75 was given to me! well, it was repayment for taking my neighbors pond and turning into something she could enjoy and actually see her fish. monster channel cats in there, that ate 3 koi this summer. so it was a gift, but an earned gift. however, i did purchase everything else with money i made working my 2 jobs and all. fat bass is right, kids are spoiled, i see it every day at petsmart. parents by them fish tanks that
will keep the kids attention for about a week :( its sad to see it but it happens all to much, i guess i work to hard and i dont understand lol

That 150 gallon's mine and I doubt I'll find another tank like that. I was wondering if you wanted a 210 from this one place that seemed to have a good price but your place sounds better. Hope you get the job :).

Im 15 and I got a job to support my addiction. I have plenty of money now to buy a 210 gallon tank the problem is that I am to scared to spend the money. I don't like spending the money I worked hard to earn now. It kinda sucks. And I always get the thing from my parents like "well when you get a car you will need some money saved up so if something goes wrong you will need it." Blah.... I hate the guilt trips I get.

the cost of the tank is just the tip of the iceberg. Huge tanks require big heavy and often expensive stands (esp if you want them to look good). Also need a canopy and lights.

Then you have to consider doing 30-50% water changes a week. That 100 - 150 gallons of water a week. Make sure your parents are cool with increasing your monthly water usage by 400+ gallons. Theres also the increase in electric bill. To run my Mag24, i calculated it will increase my monthly eletcric bill by 15$ (thats 180$/yr) . Throw in some lights and a heater thats even more. Make sure your parents know that as well. You sure dont want them to tell you te sell it after its up and running.

Also you'll need to buy water conditioner by the gallon.

Then you need a filter. Everyone says DYI w/d are cheap. Yeah maybe for the containers, but you'll need a 100$ pump and filter material and all the PVC to plumb it. All that stuff adds up quickly. I prolly put 50$ in pvc parts alone. another 15$ in nylon scrubbies and then 10$ for quilt padding. So a cheap W/d still costs ya over 250$ all said and done.

Just things that are often overloooked when buying a big tank.
