some people use herp cork barks or driftwood, cut them to size and wedge them width wise in your tank.

To answer the original question. Body filler becomes inert, and thus aquarium safe, after a certain amount of time. I'm not sure on the length of this period but I'd guess it'd be 7-14 days at most.

Your turtle is a wuss, mine would totally clear the acrylic fence and jump (fall?) to the floor. He's made similar escape attempts before.
