A HUGE thanks to midnight for the guide to building a cheap (and to be honest; better quality) gravel vac! The only thing it doesn't have that ones at the LFS has, is the so called "Automatic-Siphon" that breaks after a couple uses AND takes longer than just sucking the end of the tube.

midnight's guide:

Thanks again midnight!

Looks good. Nice job!

the syphon... one of fishkeepings most amazing reinvention...

You are lucky to have good stock at your Lowes (or Menards). Midnight isn't more than 150 miles from me and our Lowes have different stock. Mine only carries really flimsy bulb protectors. It folds and crumples when I try to gravel vac. :(

Instead of "sucking it" just feed two feet of the soft line under water. Then kink it to hold the water in it and pull it out of the tank and release below the water line. That will start your syphon without a mouthful.

^even easier, just scoop water out the top of the tank and let it fall through the tube, then submerge the end in the water backwards. Less messy.

This bad boy will suck start a Harley. I think we need a new thread. Show me your vacuum. Hey and before you laugh I used Quality Duct Tape. Honestly it is getting late here and Goodnight.
