Hi, am a newbie building a ply & acrylic tank (about 160 US gals). Have sealed with epoxy resin, but keep springing leaks... every time i seal one, another appears! A friend suggested lining it with butyl pond liner... any ideas if this would work?

A liberal appllication of silicon should do the trick. I was having problems sealing pin holes in epoxy too, where the same problem pinholes wouldn't patch no matter how many times I went over it or what lengths I went to to prepare the surface. It was like these holes had positive air pressure pushing in or something. (was on concrete foundation) Once I went over those holes with silicon I was good to go.

While I was at it, I put a nice fat bead of it in all the corner seams, just to protect against any future cracking of the epoxy that might happen.

Have you done any layers of fiberglass, or is it just epoxy? More epoxy or silicone would probably be best.

Just epoxy so far, although i've tried the silicone this evening. Am gonna leave 24 hours then try another practice run...

i think a lot of the time, the fiberglass roving help eliminate some of those pin holes.

^ Yep, I agree. If it is leaking in corners it really should be reinforced (the corners and seams should be done reguardless). Openings are created when the plywood is able to move. If the tank is moved from its current location, you will have a new set of leaks.

Well, it's filled and doesn't seem to have any more leaks. I ended up using about 4 tubes of silicone and just coating all the inside surfaces. Iv'e also run a thick bead along all the joints. I'm going to leave overnight filled, I just hope I don't end up with a very wet dining room tomorrow morning!! Thanks for all the help... I'll post some pics once its got fish in, although it won't be for a while as we're moving house soon. Oh the joy... Looks like i'll be sealing it all over again!!

We look at pix of unfinished tanks if we have too :D

Start posting.
