  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You want at least 36" for depth. Personally I like them in the 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 foot depth range. The water temperiture is more stable that way. (be careful however as some municipalities require a fence for any pond deeper than 18"

ye legal here but a ***** to heat the pond . i guess you cant win lol :nilly:

4.5' would suck if i had to dig it by hand, lol. thanks for the advice though. i might go 5 and rent some equipment..

I belive I left out the ...build or buy a filter....step...oops

build a pond filter . cheap and really easy . cost less than 100 dollars if you know what your doing .

i got a large 60 gal ish water butt and plumbed pvc so that it sprayed out through a bucket in the bottom of the filter and drilled loads of holes in it to allow water flow . then i put gravel on to about a foot deep and bought filter floss off of ebay . the pond has been clear for over a month and my tests are perfect . my pond is around 100 uk gal and has 6 small koi , 2 rud , minnows ,and 5 goldfish and a load of small fry .

i hate hand digging . you always bring out a pile twice as big as the hole . lol
and here its back breaking with are heavy clay soil

I dug a 18'x28' irregular shaped pond that varied from 3 feet at the plant steps to 5 1/2 feet at the deepest point just under the waterfall from the upper pond by myself...and all by hand in a little over a week. You don't need power equipment.

wolf got any pics

and what is your soil like . clay , sand
what did you do with the soil left over ?
