Yeah, but so do most heaters if they malfunction.

Mine won`t.
It can stick on 24/7 and my tank will only hit 80 +or- 1-2 deg.
Of course, if you have more than a couple watts per gallon heater, you are right.

Great idea. Are they on the outside of your tank? How are they working?

I have one in the stand next to the pump and filter, plumbed inline between the canister and the return spray wand at the top of the tank.
They work as designed.

the only part i dont get is the union cut in half. where is it in the final assembly and can u exsplain that part more?

The repair union has a rubber seal in it, and that is what fits on the glass...the unit seals to the glass tube, the wire is already outside the device...

After cutting the 3/4" repair coupler in half you need to reduce the outside diameter to fit inside a 1 1/2" x 1" reducer bushing.This is the only tricky part, watch your fingers.
The last photo is the high tech tool I used.
