DIY Mech. Filtration

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yep... Quilt batting is one of my favorite things to use for aquariums that wasn't designed for it... That, buckets, and scrubbies :)

May I ask how much? I have been looking to supplement some mechanical filtration on my tank, a 75g with about 90g of water in the system.

I have seen people use these before and they say that they use the filter it comes with until it clogs, then they cut it away and wrap the core in quilt batting, cheap and easy. 3 or 4 bucks are wally-world will get you a huge roll that could be densly packed into this filter.

Hey,

I think ive seen you when i scanned some DIY's on Ofish.. Each pre-filter housing was $37 at Lowes. There are large capacity ones for $49, the filters themselves are much more expensive but since you plan on using filter floss it might be a better choice.

Ill prolly end up doing the same if the small micron filters dont work out for me. Thats why im here! so you can look at my mistakes and be like ok! I wont do that!

Good luck!

exactly what i said befor dacron batting is cheap $7 will last my 4-6 months working with over 1400g in tanks

I like seeing people use these filters. Just makes me want to do it on my tank too.

What I would probubly do, it have the filter run through some sort of prefilter, either canister filter or pond filter to filter out lots of the larger junk, then have it go to these HH filters. Maybe thats a good idea? Just something I thought of just now.

timeneverfreezes, check the flow of the carbon filters, they're alot lower and clog fast so use them after all other filtration.

Yeah Ive been thinking about this one, 2 microns is very small, The filters themselves look like two filter papers with carbon in between. I might try poking holes or something similar through the first layer of paper.

I do have a prefilter on the Rio2100 but it is very coarse sponge and would the only thing it could catch would be a guppy. Remember that in addition to everything I am only filtering water from the sump, so that means the water first has to make it between the walls of the overflows, down to the bottom of the overflows and through the sump media then over a divider. On its trip im betting at least 75% of the solids and heavy particles settle before hitting the Rio intake. I wish I could stick the intake into the tank to get everything actually. :)

O.K Here are some updates its been around 24hrs or so. The pump output is still very strong and the filters look discolored but dont actually contain many large particles. None in the second filter.

Some large solids barely visible between the folds of the first.

I removed the housing and swished the second filter around and you can there is a significant amount of small sized sediment.

Ive decided to change the second cartridge to a 5 micron "premium". It looks like the first does a bang up job of capturing every little particle and the second only got discolored with no actual "large" particles in the filter.

This is a picture of the cartridge thats going into the second filter. I was trying to capture how thick it actually is.

After I installed the thick 5 Micron I checked the water flow on the return and its still going strong.

More updates in the days to follow!
