DIY Monster Canister Filter!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I love the DIY attitude, however a canister filter is not easy to make, and if you make some messups, You may end up with a bunch of dead shrimp and 110 gallons of water on your floor. Make a sump and hook up a few pumps, I bought two small 20 gallon sumps and two 600GPH pumps and they are hooked up to my 120. I get crystal clear water, a huge bio colony, its cheap, and its safer than a canister (I had a eheim pro 2e before, It gave me no mech filter, little flow, and not much bio)

i know this thread is old.....

but yeah i agree with the guy above me, diy filters are good. but diy canisters can be tough sicne you ahve to get it air tight

How will you contain the media and what kind will you use. My canister is really old and has three basket type things inside.

I am glad I read thru this thread.. There seems to be no further posts from OP after his 110 g sprung a leak at the seam...

I built a canister filter for my pond using a 55g plastic barrel with a screw on top.
Here is the twist, I pump water into the barrel and up thru the bio material and jap mat etc. Then the top is NOT on the barrel. Instead the top is open and I have a large low flower pot (Decorative) with no bottom fitted tightly into the mouth of the barrel. Water flows out of the pot spilling over the "Scalped" top. all this sits INSIDE my pond out of the way at one end under some bushing plants. My pump is a Re Sun with 4,500 lph output.

It does a GREAT job, relatively easy to clean although I do pull it out of the pod for cleaning it is not too bad a job and only requires cleaning about every 6 months.
pictures 2morrow it is night here now..

Water is pristine and it is in fact a Feature to the pond like a waterfall..

I guess what I have is a bit like a sump than a sealed canister filter.

I did have it sealed but the pressure split the barrel after replacing the split barrel (3US$ here) I went with the top off non sealed described above and have been happy with it for over 5 years now.

Enjoy

however a canister filter is not easy to make

I thought I was the only one to spread the word.
