KaiserSousay, ... but that post is very constructive.
lolz
Searching=good, but if someone doesnt find an old post, no big deal, post a link 4 them. Lol search it 4 them

I gotta agree with kaisersoussay but at the same time, sometimes you find an old thread with no activity so it can be good to start a new thread. there is so much info here that you miss out on alot if you dont do searches. I try and look at the historical info before I post a question thread so that I can ask a more informed question. Easily half my questions are answered by searching.
On the topic of christmass lights though, Id encourage caution. although they are often rated for outdoor use and can handle the elements/moisture, they are not designed to be bunched up like they might be for an aquarium application. this could be dangerous.
good luck and proceed with caution

I'm glad you agree with me, history is fine and reading up on what people have done before. However what if someone has done the process differently, then maybe it deserves a new post. Why the hell you wasting your time going through old posts to then just moan about them!

Anyway, sod it agree to disagree and all that.

Ya searching is good, I have kept myself from starting threads by searching dozens of times, but its kinda hypocritical to say "Its so easy to find it with a search" & not post a link. Practice what you preach and whatnot.
P.S. no offence meant to anyone

This thread is 1 year old but I thought that I would try and resurface it. I thought of this idea on my own but apparently it wasn't original. (PLUS SOME GOOD VINTAGE HUMOR ON REVAMPING OLD THREADS IS IN HERE)

I found a blue LED rope light on an after Xmas sale for $7 @ 12ft (at Target). It is indoor/outdoor 150 LEDs at 9 watts! At first I was going to attach it with T75 staples used for 25 pair telcom cable. I was worried about humidity in the canopy so I canned that idea. Instead I dismantled my T5 light fixture and Velcro'd the rope in a straight neat fashion behind the safety glass next to but not touching the existing T5 tube. Each light is on a timer so they are never on at the same time. It's way better than any moon light that I had previously. PetCo has a moon light with 3 LEDs for $14, lame! Anyway I'm way stoked my 6ft tank is totally illuminated. I bet it would be fine out of my enclosure if properly strapped but it fits and works fine behind the T5 light fixture safety window. Hope no one rips me a new one on this thread bc I think it's rad and a sweet DIY project. BTW HomeDepot LEDs are way pricey....Dig

Hi all.... my first post on MFK
I have found some AWSOME LEDs on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...0431074013&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK:MEWNX:IT
Ebay item #300431074013

I have 2 of them on my 125 and they work great..... and they were under $6 shipped, run on 12v dc and are waterproof.

Here is what they look like on..............

And with the room dark.............

I used a power supply fron an old pc for this tank, but my 55 has the same lights using a dc adaptor from an old cell phone charger. The pros of the computer power supply is that you can run many strips at once.

I have been using xmas lights for 3 years. They work great. The cheap rope lights i got from walmart didn't last that long.

In white anyhow, but my whites were on 12 hours a day everyday, and slowly started burning out. My blues are only on a few hours and work great.

The regular led xmas lights gave a nicer shimmer effect, because i had the bulbs points down. But I will redo my hood with better led rope lights and an additional timer to limit the total time each day the lights are one. going to two sets of white on separate timers and a set of blue on its own timer.

My blue pic was pretty weak, It is about twice as bright as the pic shows,. i will try and get one of the rope light i have in there now as temp test.

Do they actually save much on electricity with all the LED's being used? The white lights look amazing, and im sure the blue looks fantastic in person! Also what are the light ranges we need to bring out the colors of the fish we keep?
