Hahah, actually, it happened to me too with a CPR unit. Even with the Toms prefilter unit, it still clogged. Luckily I caught it before it started to spill over the tank  From now on, strictly drilled for me!

+1. CPR overflow + Aqualifter = saltwater on floor (many times over).

Never again.

See, I'm not the only one!! But according to the expert plumbers on MFK....

so to summarize
these POS need to have a pump constantly pulling air/water
in order to keep the siphon alive correct?
That's the problem?

why can't you cap it off
install a one-way valve
or return the line to below water level

You are correct.

I tried putting a check valve on there. I then tried just sealing off the damn hole. Never worked, it slowly loses siphon. It needs that pump to be constantly sucking to work. They look sleak, but have one major design flaw.

Here's what I use.

It works great and never has lost the siphon. The main thing is to keep the u-tube centered (when looking down from the top), otherwise bubbles can enter from the falling water on the outer edges where it spills over the teeth. I have never had a problem with it, and super reliable.

^ Yeah I'd say the u-tube style of overflow is more reliable than the CPR style

Check it out Chomps Built one
OP here's what you were looking for

with redundant siphon redundancy
to address above issues :)

And for my drilled tanks, I use a perforated drain pipe with sponge prefilters....Its pretty much blockage proof as long as you check it out every month or so.
