DIY overflow attemp - FAILED!!!!

ok, so i tried creating a syphon overflow lyk the one in the second post of this thread:

when it started overflowing, it just went straight past the water break line and nearly emptied half of my tank!!!!

i did have one fault tho, i had just an aelbow where the "t" peice should be, do you guys think this is why it didnt work?

yes the t provides a vent, the elbow with no vent makes it a syphon.

that does make a lot of sense, does the top of the vent pipe have to come over the highest loop ( the one that passes over the tank) or can it be lower?

it would just look nicer if the tip of the vent pipe was in veiw....

i wasnt sure if it would work, but i had everything in the house exept from a tee so i thought f*@k it, ill give it a go.....

i regretted it as the water came from within an inch of the top of my sump!!!

no, it can be lower as the water will not flow above the t.

it is not higher on the diagram i pointed out.... is this a fault on the diagram?

surely the water flowing out the tee will prevent it from coming out the stubby vent?

The height of the outside t section is what determines your water level in your tank. The T is used so it to create a vent as already stated so the tank will only drain as low as the T.
