DIY Overflow..... expected GPH?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you have any better pics of the overflow system ya have there ? also is these the same ya see on youtube that guys are doing now ? seems like a much safier way rather then the HOB and running into a overflow problem when the power goes out....

im sure its been said before but what is the difference between running full siphon, and vented?

The overflow Jacunaba has is a vertical overflow not a full siphon. It will restart when the electricity comes back on and stop when it goes off. It does suck air into the system from the vent tube in the back preventing it from being a full siphon. And if you plug the back vent tube it will run full siphon, (((((( but you will not get the overflow to restart after the electricity shuts off. So plugging it is not recommended this vent is needed ))))))

It flows 2" PVC = 40GPM = 2400GPH Each = 4800 GPH running Dual Siphons , ((((((( But they have to be 36 INCHES long to reach these numbers/GPH. )))))))))

He made his shorter so it will not get the 2400GPH Flow on each unit.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
The Herbie that Jc1119 made are drain holes drilled in the bottom of the glass with down flow tubes extending up to the top surface of the water. Meaning water level is higher than the drain inlet thus not allowing air to get into the down flow tubes.
Jc1119's is more like a drain were the water flows strait down into the sump with the Herbie being a full siphon. Full siphons pull water down at the max capacity of the plumbing.
unlike the Siphon overflow that Jacunaba made were the water has to work it's way through the U pieces and up over the tank top and back down.
Both work well, but Jc1119 will take more water flow.

If designed correctly both will restart when electricity comes on and stop flowing when shuts off.

Here is the Herbie Overflow
