im going to be building a overflow/sump for my 55 and i have some Q's

1. HOw much GPH does a 1" siphon overflow produce
2. is most pvc aquarium safe, if nto how do i tell
3. what is your recommendation for pvc adhesive
4. wat brand pump do you recommend along with cost and supplier/distributor

i was also thinking about a way to not even need a pump, if you can siphon water out of a tank why can't it be done back into the tank and not have to worry about power failures or anything, has this been done, or wud the flow to the sump be greater then the flow to the tank?

1-a 1" overflow will flow plenty for a 55gal.(not sure exactly how much, maybe 600).I use one 1" on my 75,works great.

2-PVC is safe,I dont think ABS is though.

3-Glue that can be used in potable applications is the safe way,but once cured I think they are all good.

4-I like the Quiet One pumps.Cost will vary on pump size,I got mine from BigAlsOnline I think.

PS an overflow is not a syphon.

then the sticky at the top of this forum is miss titled

would it be a bad idea to add a layer of carbon and/or ammonia removers to the sump or would this hinder the bacteria

Laws of physics don't work so that you can flow water in and out of your tank, water is magnetic, and will follow itself out of your aquarium with the use of gravity, but in order to reverse it back to the tank you need some sort of power supplied force bringing it back up to the aquarium.
If you put a sump directly behind your aquarium, the syphon action would stop as soon as you reached equal levels in your sump and tank.
I hope I am not coming off snobbish, but I have thought the same thing before... this is how I relized it could not work.

nah its cool

@justlooking, the sticky: DIY overflow works on a siphon basis and called an overflow you said a siphon and an overflow are different assuming your right then that sticky is miss labeled

"Water is magnetic" thanks, I had to write that down...Is your world round like ours??? .

Never assume I am right :D .
& you are right the DIY overflow is in a way a syphon.

Yeah, it's just easier for most to comprehend the basics then we snap the hard stuff at them...Like you don't actually cycle a tank...you cycle the filter.:D

More than enough. I would shoot for 200gph on a 55. It will easily keep up with that.
2. is most pvc aquarium safe, if nto how do i tell
If it's safe for drinking water, it's safe for aquariums (except for certain things, like chlorine :D)
3. what is your recommendation for pvc adhesive
General PVC adhesive
4. wat brand pump do you recommend along with cost and supplier/distributor
I would also recommend a pentair quiet one that would flow about 200gph @ whatever height your return will be. I've had excellent luck with these inexpensive and efficient pumps.

see above, I hope you can read the crap teal color, I'm using the dark skin so I'm not sure how this will look on light.
