ive read on how to make the overflow, but until now i still have no idea how it works:confused: siphon? can somebody explain it to me thanks!:)

It's not a syphon, it's an overflow. As the sump pump puts water into the tank excess water is pushed out thru the overflow to the filter/sump.

Water cannot rise hight than what the overflow is set for unless a blockage occurs in the overflow. I suggest dual overflows for this reason.

Have you read the posts on here about them, they go into detail there.

i just dont understand.. the pipe over the edge of the tank is higher than the water level in the tank thats whats iam confused about.i know the pump pumps water from the sump into the tank causing the water to rise and then water overflows into the pipe, hows the water going to climb over the pipe with the air intake thingy then down into the sump?

ive made a small w/d sump for a small tank and i just used siphon and control of water level i made sure if the siphon is faster than the pump or if the pump stopped working, the water flowing into the w/d will not overflow and water in the tank will not get too low ,and if the pump pumps water too fast the water level should be just right so the water wont overflow the tank.
this system is not really good because if the siphone breaks i will have to go through alot of trouble making them continue flowing water into the w/d .
so i want something like this kind of overflow that will work by itself after the pump starts working =)

Give these two a look, I'll be back late tonite.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zVGwdRVHU4 remember this is a sales pitch but in part of the demo you can see they attach a small black hose, this is how they suck the air out of the system (crossover from inside to outside the tank) This os where you put an air check valve.

We'll get you to understand this even if we have to send Tony over to motivate you .

wow that was really useful info
thanks! i have to learn more about it but first i need to get some sleep (havent slept in 2days!!)

Build one exactly like the pictures and try it out. It costs about 7 bucks or something cheap. Once you try it out you'll know exactly how it works.

Thats what I did. I still wondered how certain parts worked until I built one and shared on my progress on MFK. People (chompers) helped me out and told me what I did wrong. When I put it to use it all made sense.

Check out the first sticky in this thread

oh ya one more thing! i saw the video in the link then if i dont have the vacc thingy then i need to suck on it?!?!

yes indeed. You would need to put in an air line check valve.

i actually found that the check valuve didn't work all that great when i made mine, a simple airline flow valve works better, imho.
