I have been requested to start a thread to describe the design, construction, and operation of my OHF I built for my 240 gallon plywood tank.
I will build a model of it in Google Sketchup when I get Windows back on my computer. (I run Linux)
So my thought for a above tank filter started when I designed my stand. There was going to be no room for a sump in the stand. Also I wanted to maximize the pump flow so 1' of head vs 4' of head.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Criteria for the filter,
Hold around 30-40 gallons during operation. Have a large mechanical filtration area. room for bio media, and house the heaters.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Design,
8x1x1 in size. hangs over the back of the tank by 4" to reduce the weight on the tank. Water Level at 4.5" giving apx operating volume of 25 gallons. During power outage water level goes down less than 1/2"
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Construction,
Filter is plywood coated with Sweetwater Epoxy paint. 2 inputs on the front side towards the top, and 4 exits on the bottom. Intake is 1" and the exits are 2x 1" and 2x 1.5"
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Operation,
Working as designed. Quiet other than a little splashing that you have to be almost next to the tank to hear.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
More to follow, as well as pictures with more detailed description.
