Quick question. Doing an overhead diy filter for one of my tanks using totes. Would a 10 gallon tote holding submerged lava rock have more surface area than the same 10 gallon tote filled with spongies and having the water "rain" down over them?
Why not design a spray bar over the lava rock. It will have the same effect as the w/d with the plastic pot scrubbers.Quick question. Doing an overhead diy filter for one of my tanks using totes. Also will decrease the weight of the tote. Why not design a spray bar over the lava rock. It will have the same effect as the w/d with the plastic pot scrubbers.
It will be better with the water spraying over it. The bacteria on the lava rock will receive plenty oxygen imo.great idea with the spray bar but doesn't the lava rock work best when totally submerged?
.....works the same way as bio balls pretty much.It will be better with the water spraying over it. The bacteria on the lava rock will receive plenty oxygen imo.

Either option would work the plastic pot scrubbers would be less weight . You will receive conflicting opinions lol.So you guys agree spray bar over lava rock better than spray bar over scrubbies?
