Quick question. Doing an overhead diy filter for one of my tanks using totes. Would a 10 gallon tote holding submerged lava rock have more surface area than the same 10 gallon tote filled with spongies and having the water "rain" down over them?

Why not design a spray bar over the lava rock. It will have the same effect as the w/d with the plastic pot scrubbers.

great idea with the spray bar but doesn't the lava rock work best when totally submerged?

It will be better with the water spraying over it. The bacteria on the lava rock will receive plenty oxygen imo.
.....works the same way as bio balls pretty much.
