Yeah, such is life I suppose. I'll post some pics when I build the window planter I have an old powerhead that I'll use for a pump.

You have plenty of room under that tank for a sump! You could go the more extensive route and change up the lower braces to give you all the room you could ever need. Custom build sumps that fit in the square holes like your canister did. Or throw a sheet of plywood under there to make a flat surface and squeeze in a sump with the room you have left! You have plenty of options. Good luck!
Done and running as I type this. I have a 10G Bow front fed by a Cacade 1500 filter filled with BioMedia- the Bowfront sits atop my 125g semi agro tank and holds a 7' Potho's *tree* that I have growing off of simple CFL bulbs and heat lamp trim. I don't even bother to checked Nitrates, because if there's ever a spike, the Pothos grow new roots quickly! and gobble up the excess food!
I also utlizee a large pond pump in the middle of the tank (under driftwood) that feeds a flower pot(same like in the above video) that is 2.5' long. I built a simple box to set both items above right above the tank made of cedar fence boards and made a simple spraybar style sump into the flowerbox that drains into the tank providing a bit of current too!
Overhead filters are huge in the hobby overseas because of simplicity.
I will try to get some pics of my setup on here later to explain in better.

Nice!!! I just bought all the supplies but I still need bulkhead then mine will be up and running. I siliconed some tubing to a powerhead for the pump
