DIY pier pylon

So my wife and I watch The Fishtank Kings on Natgeo and last week they made a tank that featured a peir pylon as the main structure for one of the tanks. Now my wife really wants one in our 125g FOWLR tank, but I'm not sure how to construct one. As you guys know on the FW side of the world they use pink foam from one of the big box stores. They carve it up then cover it with cement and then glue it to the back glass to make 3d backgrounds. I wonder if could do something similar by gluing the foam to PVC? What would be the best way to glue the foam to the PVC? silicone? superglue?

Has anybody done anything this before? Or have any other ideas?

How about just using real wood? You can seal it and everything if you don't want to wait for the tannins to come out. Just make sure it's not treated wood. As for great stuff on the PVC, you'll need to roughly sand the PVC to allow the GS to adhere to it, but it may still come off over time. How about making the pylon appear to be covered in moss, barnacles, etc and just glue substrates and plants into it?
