I have to agree with greengiant.. For me it is not so much saving money (not that I am made of it) but I like the satisfaction of "Yea I did that !" And also looking for the deals. I got a few good deals on materials also that helped.

would this work as a good sealent?? i like the liquid rubber idea, seems like it would be alot more durable?? agree or dissagree??? Also what type of ply wood sheets should I get for a 300 gal tank? also what thickness of glass? also whats cheaper gllass or acrylic and what are the pros and cons for each? I think my wife is finally going to allow me to build one. and would a 50 gallon sump be large enough for filtration for a 300 gallon tank?

a 50 would be large enough IMO but that can depend on stocking also. glass thickness will depend on dimensions. make sure it will fit throught the doors you need it to. and give yourself some wiggle room. I am building mine to be 6'x3'x34" tall there is a glass thickness calculator in the stickys at the top of the DIY section. thewre is also an Acrylic thickeness calculator there. check out your glass prices for the different thicknesses also before you start construction. some places try to rape you when you look for thicker glass which can add a big cost to the tank. Glass is cheeper 99% of the time but Acrylic is a bit clearer but scratches easily. good luck with the build
