DIY PVC Overflow - check valve issue?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had problems when I built my own overflows out of PVC, constantly loosing prime/building up air pockets etc., now I use the 1 1/4" commercial tubes, ( I think they were @ $5 each from Drs foster smith), and do not need to use check valves.
I do think if you are loosing suction, the Aqualifter would be great insurance. Especially if the alternative is a burned out pump, or overflowing tank.

Ok, I'll try again. What did you cover the holes in the over flows with to prevent fish from taking a roller coaster ride through the over flow? In one week, I've rescued 4 fish from the sump, so I NEED to put some sort of mesh over the hole. Three cories and a German Ram have been rescued so far. I'd prefer to stop rescuing fish. I'm thinking of using the mesh from an old fish net. Thoughts?

Thanks.

I cut pieces of an aquaclear filter and zip tied them to the end of the intake. The Aqauclear sponges have pretty big pores so shouldn't clog to easily.

strainers, screen, sponge, hoghair floss.. prettymuch whatever you want.. for a while i used a floating worm feeder..
