I'm a proponent of lots of water changes, with vacuuming, and getting detritus out of the tank altogether, as opposed to letting the filter take care of it.
To me allowing the filter to hold stuff that metabolizes for any length of time, is a bit like sweeping stuff under a rug, although its out of sight, its still in the water. And its the chemical soup you can't see, that is more detrimental than anything else.
I prefer my nitrate level to be no higher than 2 to 5ppm.

and you said that these types of overflows don't pick up heavy particles in the water, so how do you handle this? would i have to run a canister as well or wait till the end of the week and siphon in out?
