DIY PVC overflows - safe?

 • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my overflow box sounds like a public restroom in constant use. My DIY overflows are dead silent. Guess whats getting replaced this weekend.

best thing to do is to test the overflow, i unpluged my pump and it filled the bin up the top so i raised the intake tube a litte then retried, it filled it up half way and stopped, it matters where the intake tube is and how much water it can syphon out of the tank , cool thing is though when i turned the pump back on the syphon didnt break it just started working again..... badass eh?

If the power goes out, does it restart? I looked at the sticky and it appears to be designed so power outages don't effect it.

here we go,
i made these videos for some guys on another forum who were asking the same question.

(dont mind the raspy drowsy narration, ive been sick for about 4 days at the time of filming)

part 1: shut down

PVC “pretzels” are running sump systems all over the world.
Some work just great, some do not.
The ones that do not, were poorly researched or poorly built.
Could well be both of the above.
At least a hundred web pages devoted to the design and construction of these overflows
Most all are proven designs, that if assembled correctly, will stop and restart with the return pumps output.
I was pretty happy with mine.
I set up a couple of buckets in the garage for a test bed. Top bucket pretty close to the tank height from the bottom bucket which would act as the sump. Much easier to test than having it on the tank in the living room.

Siphon overflows (diy or store bought) are pretty reliable if they are constructed well, but they can fail for a few reasons

why mine have failed in the past:

pvc pipe to small

having reducers "down stream" from the overflow (like a hose coupler)

allowing surface floating food to get sucked into the overflow
