DIY, simple decorations for the tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How will I know when all the tannins have been released from the wood?

It'll stop leaking tannins...how long it takes depends...could be a couple days...weeks...months

When it doesnt stain your water.

Gotcha! I picked up a nice piece of driftwood from the river today. Scrubbed it down really well with a stiff brush, then boiled it for a couple hours until the water was 98% clear. I also made a cave out of a coconut! It's boiling right now to get rid of tannins, but I'll post a picture with the next water change.

Welcome to MFK. Is this your first tank? If so, I'm betting you'll go monster in no time. This is a fun and rewarding hobby. Good luck on your project.

Thank you! No, it's not my first tank. But it is MY first tank, one that I will be the only caretaker of. When I was a kid my parents had fish, right now my younger sister has the 20 gallon with goldfish in it...being rehomed to a pond. After that's done, then the tank will be mine! And it'll already be cycled, since there's been a fish in there. I know I'll need to do water testing and all before putting in the new fish. I have no idea how water testing works, but I'll figure it out! That's a whole different branch of research that I need to do :) I'm one of those people who will research something to death before commiting to it. I'm already debating buying something bigger than a 20gal...Heheh.

Here's my piece of driftwood...

I'm debating whether or not I should cut a small "door" in the coconut shell, or if I should just let them burrow under themselves(the Kuhli loaches!)?

Oh, and this is my Border Collie. Her "job" is to herd the fish, and make sure they stay in the tank. She will sit there for hours on end, staring at the fish..

Thats a good piece of wood.

The 20 gallon is a good tank to start with. You will be wanting another tank I guarantee.

Cute pooch too.

Thanks :) She's my girl. Goes everywhere, and does everything, with me!

I can't wait to get the tank going, and I know I'll be wanting another! The only problem is that I'm 16 years old, so it'd ultimately be my parent's decision if I could get a larger one.
We already have a zoo at our house! 3 Dachshunds...Although one of them doesn't have much time left. My Border Collie...And then I also foster Border Collies for the Border Collie Rescue of Northern California. So at any given time we usually have 5 dogs in the house, sometimes 6 if I'm also transporting for rescue. We also have three cats, a mouse...And the fish.
