DIY Skin for metal stand.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is a mahogany fascia built onto a steel stand by my father who builds fine furniture. It was a gift to me, and has stood up for about 15 years now. It is built in a way so that the wood is only around the front and sides, and is removable- it's attached to the stand only because it fits around it like a puzzle, no tape or Velcro or anything like that.

I was thinking of maybe using medium density fiber board ( cheaper than plywood) then glue vinyl flooring to it. Then attach with magnets

They are the magnets you want, but they get ones with a hole in centre to screw them in, otherwise if glued on they crack off after a while.

I used those, but I didn't want a DIY look so went to ikea and bought cheap kitchen cabinet doors and used them to box stand in. Looks really professional but only cost me around £50 plus the magnets. I'll find a pic

That's it. Just used a 1x4 wooden strip painted to match colours along the bottom for doors to 'rest' on, and bring them to the right height. then magnets are on the top to keep.the doors shut.

Eatsomekiwis Eatsomekiwis I'm not usually a big fan of black stands, I tend to like stained wood more, but I gotta say I really like yours. It has a real smooth clean look to it. Very nice.
Thanks bro, part of the agreement with the wife is any tank I bring inside has to look nice, clean, and match. IKEA paneling has saved me many arguments and some serious change since they are relatively cheap. In the process now of building a 480 and plan to do that stand the same way
