DIY Sponge Filter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ajar, getting back to the original topic of the thread. Hats off to you mate! That is a very slick idea. I disagree with taking the course sponge out of the top. I think it's an excellent idea as long as the air/water mix can flow through it. You can probably tune that with a needle valve anyway.
You just invented a combination wet/dry sponge filter... Congratulations my man! I'll bet that set up eats ammonia and nitrite like no other sponge filter. I have to build one myself.

thanks for the comments people...
I'm very happy with the setup. noise is about the same as a hob. I do 30% wc everyday and vacuum any uneaten food. the substrate was from a cycled tank. i've added some crush coral in the plastic tube. hopefully the electric blue hap currently growing in it will be happy until i can get those curviceps in. i also have some rams i can relocate. we'll see how my mood changes. =)

best 10 gal i've ever dealt with.

Shellies will work by the way if you want some cichlids in a small tank. I agree with M. multifaciatus and N.brevis as good choices.

yeah- i'm waiting for an lfs to start stocking them again. we'll see though, as my mood for fish is so erratic. i didnt put the coarse sponge back in- the substrate will deal with the beneficial backeria.
