I am looking to make a DIY sponge for my tank. My stingrays seem to need the sponge changed every month and its costing me $$$$. What can I use in the filter for a sponge?

You shouldn't be changing the sponge. You should just have to rinse and squeeze it in tank water to remove the debris and then reinstall.

Exactly.
Rinse them.
Although I have a deep gravel bed so I don't mind killing off a portion of my BB by rinsing it.
You just can't clean them that good under cold, pressure-less water.

ok guys thanks I will try that. Also I was wondering my filters get alot of snails in them. Do stingrays not eat snails?

The snails are probably too small for your ray to eat.
