I have some 1" PVC pipe that I want to make into a spray bar on the return side of my filter. It will attach it to the inside of my tank through my 1" bulkhead. It will be 900mm / 90cm / 36" long and capped on the end.

Here's the question I have.....

1. How many holes, and what size holes are best to drill??

It would depend on the outflow of your pump

Your pump is 400gph so your are probably getting 300 at the tank. And the spray bar is 36" long.

1/8" holes 1" apart will work and then you could go up a size easily after that if needed.

I have never put such a small amount of flow thru a DIY spray bar. But I own a canister 350gph and it has a 15'' spray bar with 1/8'' holes in it every 1/2" or so.

My spray bar in my main tank is 48" long and has 1/4" holes every inch pushed by a 1400gph pump and the water shoots out about 15" or so.

Just go with 1/8" and work your way up.

No problem

sorry I couldn't give a clean cut answer.

Sorry for stealing this thread, but i thought it would be better to post here rather than start a new one. I have two otto internal filters rated at 2000L/h each in my 6ft and the water flow is disrupting my plants. Do you think it would be better to fit them to a 6ft long spray bar pointed towards the surface? (need this for more surface adgetation, more co2)

I was thinking of simply setting a 5.5ft long piece of pvc, then a couple of elbows and attaching it as shown below.

Then i would attack some moss to try and hide it.

Cheers

Not a bad idea!

Thanks Knowdafish,

I was thinking of putting each of the filters on each end, that would eliminate the elbows and i would just get the pipe. Then i thought if my holes were too small the extra pressure might cause pressure on the glass at each end. This way, the point that the flow will be least will be in the middle. Therefore i would probably make the middle third slightly larger holes.
