I have a 10 gallon tank lying around and I'm thinking about making it into a sump but seeing as this is my first sump and the idea is still confusing I'm wanted to know if this design would work. The first chamber would be full of filter floss and the second would be ceramics rings, the third being the return pump. Forgive me for my poor drawing skills. *Black line is pipe from overflow, Red is return pipe.

Heres my input on the design

What's the little squiggly line above the first chamber? Is it some kind of trickle tray?
yeah its a drip plate

nevermind about that, i dont beleive your gunna need a drip plate for that design

So I can just run the pipe directly into the media? Will this setup really filter my water better than say a canister filter? Because it seems like a lot of work to setup.

What size tank are you trying to filter?

You could use a filter sock for a pre-filter.

Don't bother with a separate chamber for the pump in this small of a sump, just put pump in and fill with media.

It's for a 55 but I have a rena xp2 and a penguin biowheel filter, I just have a spare 10 and a mag drive 5 that I picked up for 20 dollars, so I might as well build a sump. So I don't need baffles at all? And the filter sock would cover the mechanical filtration so I could just fill it with ceramic rings?

ummm... i know with mine. the tray is at the bottom, holding the bioballs. i know they probably dont escape through your design with the hole being smaller, but wouldnt it be better to have the tray at the bottom so u can get access to the balls if need be, like leeching later on?
