ive been wondering how i should go about setting up a diy sump for my 55g with an old 10g sitting around. the 55 is on a big table like thing in the basement along with all my other tanks so the sump would have to be on the same level as the 55g. i cant drill it since its tempered. just wanted some tips on setup and how i should hook up the line going to the pump. maybe some examples from other people with similar setups would help too. anything helps!

Problem with using a 10 gallon is that if there's a power outage and your tank drains down to the overflow, your going to have quite a mess as that 10 gal sump will most likely over flow.

You should use at least a 20 long

id only have the pipe into the tank about 1/2 inch so that it doesnt drain that much water. and only have the water like 3 inches deep in the sump. that way it hopefully wont overflow. that sound good? or does that potentially have flaws?

i found a cheap tank on craiglist i migh pick up and use as the sump now as long as my dad says its ok. lets hope!

I would really try to get my hands on a 20 long at least. But if you wanted to try it with the 10 I would make a eggcrate cage (with 4 sides so you can put filter floss on top) about 3/4 the size of the tank, leave just enough room for the pump to fit in it.

Here's something I threw together real quick (with junk I have laying around) to give you a visual aid, it's a 10 gallon. The cage in the pic is actually designed for something else, so you'd want to make yours a little bigger. It also has to sit a couple inches off the bottom of the tank (put airstone here)

And obviously you'd want the filter floss to cover the entire top of the cage.

thanks for the help now i just need to know how to connect it to the tank so that it doesnt look horrible. should i have it be kind of a siphon or should it be pumped so it matches the output so theres always water running thru it?

If you search the DIY forum, you will find a few thread on how to make an overflow for your tank. Plenty of good information to be had.

Do a refugium with little critters and macro algae in it, I would also go with a 20 long.
