DIY Sump Questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Right now I have 2 canisters and 2 HOB filters (1 FX5 with home made spray bar , 1 Eheim 2217, 2 Aquaclear 110s) Which pushes roughly 1800 GPH

They don't seem to mind the force , I have some big fish in there. A slower flow might not hurt though.

This is for freshwater indeed , for Fancy Goldfish as a matter of fact. They are very very messy fish , so I guess I am trying to overkill things. I will take your considerations to heart and tone it down some.

What flow through the sump do you recommend ? 10x ?

It would be pretty easy to add a lot of what I consider to be superfluous stuff if a simpler design doesn't give you the results you are looking for, but I can pretty much guarantee that you will be able to fit enough bio-media in a 75G sump to handle an extremely overstocked/messy 150G goldfish tank.

In regards to the appropriate turnover rate...that's a tough question. I have personally never run more than 6X per hour and on my current setup I only run 2.5X per hour and I have never had issues with ammonia or nitrites. I think 4 to 6x is good happy medium. Fancy goldfish aren't exactly built/bred for fast moving river conditions, so that's the range I would aim for. But if you are having success with 12x on your current setup and your fish don't seem to be stressed out I don't see anything wrong with sticking with that.

How many Goldfish are you keeping/intend to keep in the 150G?

8 , I would like 11 though but they say 20 Gallons per fish so not sure if I want to add the other 3 or just do another tank
