I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to make a tank using glass from a sliding glass door? Typicaly they are 3 feet by 6 feet which would make a nice glass window for a Plywood tank.

Yeah I was thinking it would be too thin as well, I have seen some that are 1/2 inch but not worth flooding the house :-)

I have an other question as well. I see alot of people talking about the size of glass and thickness and glass thickness thread, my question is are those calulation for regular plate glass or for tempered. I know tempered is stronger but does that make a difference in the size of glass needed.

If it fails tempered glass shatters it doesn't just crack you would have a big mess real fast.

Like everyone else said, plate glass door would be too thin. You could cut it up and make smaller tanks though- I know 29g tanks are 1/4", not sure about larger sizes though.

1/2 Inch may not be ideal for a HUGE tank, but several 150ish gallon tanks are 1/2" glass. You could trim them down to be 72" x 24" or slightly higher.

It really all depends on how thick the glass is.. and how cheap the doors are.

Yeah I guess not the way to go, so what type of glass do people suggest for 6' to 8' tank about 30 inch high by 2' front to back, I would think 5/8 or greater not tempered?
